Children needing to get extra help with reading will get to be a creature teacher. This will be a fun learning experience. Children show different animals how to read with a volunteer standing by to help out when needed.
Depending on their reading level this workshop provides children with the opportunity to listen and interact with a story or read aloud to animals, helping to improve a child's reading skills and self confidence.
Reading improves language and learning abilities and provides opportunities for physical development. and future love of books. The simple act of turning the pages of a book helps to strengthen motor skills. Reading is important to a child's development and is a big factor in shaping their education. It also stimulates eye muscles and affects chemistry of the body by utilizing the brain

At its most basic level, humane education is about learning to care about the animals in our homes and communities. It is about fostering kindness, respect, and empathy for both human and animals, it’s also about looking after the environment and its diverse habitats. Children will be learning about different kinds of animals, learning how to care for them, how to approach them and how to prevent being attacked by them.

Read to Feed is both a reading motivational and a unique educational opportunity. In addition to the reading component, students learn about different cultures and the importance of food security throughout the world. It also provides a way for children to become actively involved and personally make a difference.
What Is Read to feed?
The Other Side of the Fence has come in contact with Heifer International, www.heifer.org the developers of Read to Feed, a reading incentive program that pairs a love of reading with global education. Read to Feed is a practical tool that empowers children to set off a chain reaction of positive change throughout the world. Through Reed to Feed, you can say to your children "This is what the world can look like -a world were no one is hungry and everyone is healthy - and this is how we can get there together."
Reading Motivation / Service Learning Program Inspires children to read more books for pleasure, while raising money to build a local animal shelter and to help end world hunger and improve the environment. Children will get sponsors for the books they read. Developed with the highly acclaimed Center for Teaching International Relations, University of Denver, this resource provides fun and educational activities to interest and inspire children while teaching them about important global issues at the same time. In the service - learning part of the progam, the children decide which animals they would like to symbolically 'purchase' for struggling families. Then they get a sponsor. The more books they read and time they spend on their curriculum, the more money they are able to raise. At the end of the program the money is 'pooled' together and divided - 90% going to The Other Side of the Fence { 45% to help build room for educational workshops, 30% goes toward providing care for homeless animals, 15% goes toward spay/neuter program} and 10% going to Heifer International to help struggling families around the world to become more self-sufficient. This program provides the opportunity to discuss important issues such as
- Goal Setting
-Nutrition
-Gender Equity
-Self-Reliance
-Accountability
-Improving the Environment
What do cows, chickens and goats have to do with reading? Over the 6 week program the children who are enrolled in this program will be participating in Heifer International’s Read to Feed program. During the program, the children will discuss issues surrounding world hunger and animal welfare issues, (such as the dangers of approaching familiar and unfamiliar pets, and the importance of spay and neuter) earn pledges from family, friends, and community members for the number of books they read and amount of time spent working on their curriculum. At the conclusion of the program, sponsors will make their donations to The Other Side of the Fence which will help The Other Side of the Fence accomplish their goal of providing animal welfare related resources including an animal shelter by 2012 and to help Heifer International provide food- and income-producing farm animals, and training in their care, for hungry families around the world.
Since 1944, Heifer International has helped over 4.5 million families become self-reliant through gifts of livestock. Every family that receives an animal passes on the gift of its offspring to another family in need.
The Read to Feed program is anticipated to involve 100,000 children in the U. S. and Canada over the next year. For free materials and information regarding the program, visit www.readtofeed.org For more information about Heifer International and its mission, visit www.heifer.org

Sponsors
Some may not have enough time to volunteer at local charity events. By sponsoring a child in the Reed to Feed program you are doing your part to help change the world. For six weeks the children are meeting one time a week for two hours. That means 12 hours of curriculum. Most books will be read on their own time. If you are interested in sponsoring a child you can choose which level of participation you can afford.
Level 5: Sponsor by donating $5.00 for a book that a child I sponsor reads
Level 4: Sponsor child for one week of the program = $30.00
Level 3: Sponsor child for two weeks of program = $60.00
Level 2: Sponsor child for three weeks of program = $90.00
Level 1: Sponsor child for all six weeks of program = $180.00

What is GET IT! ? GET IT!®: Global Education To Improve Tomorrow is a curriculum-based global education and service learning program that teaches students and volunteers about sustainable solutions to end world hunger and poverty.
The GET IT! curriculum engages students as investigative journalists to research, write about, and act on issues surrounding consumer choices and international trade. Students learn how to ask questions, think critically, and communicate what they learn. By writing and circulating stories based on their research, students get hands-on experience in spreading awareness about consumer issues. GET IT! alumni are prepared to be proactive global citizens. The program goes hand-in-hand with Chores for Change, another of Heifer International's educational outreach programs. Offered through Heifer's community education outreach, GET IT! is designed for middle school and high school students.

Chores for Change
Chores for Change is a program of service and learning. Participants in the Chores for Change program volunteer time working at On The Other Side of the Fence, doing things such as collecting food for a holiday food drive or passing out the food collected. The first-hand experience of confronting hunger issues in the community teaches lifelong lessons about hunger and how to help eliminate this common tragedy. Other activities include fundraising for spay/neuter program and helping with our Read to Feed program. Spending time learning about animals, their roles in life and human responsibility will lead to future generations being more responsible with their pets.
Each participant also recruits sponsors to pledge donations for time spent in volunteer activities. When the Chores for Change program ends, participants collect the donations which will be divided between On The Other Side of the Fence receiving 90% to On The Other Side of the Fence { 45% to help build room for educational workshops, 30% goes toward providing care for homeless animals, 15% goes toward spay/neuter program} and the remaining 10% will be sent to Heifer International to help fight world hunger. The first-hand experience of raising money to help people and animals in need internationally teaches important lessons about world hunger and our global community. Chores for Change, a program offered through Heifer's community education outreach, is designed for all ages, anyone is welcome to participate. Chores for Change provides a meaningful service learning experience of fighting world hunger

On The Other Side of the Fence offers several different types of training advice to pack leaders (humans) on how to deal with miscommunications between you and your pet. Since each person needs help in a different area than the next, we can create an individualized training course based on your specific needs. We are very convenient, we can go to your house or you can come to ours. Individual or group classes available.
All dogs signed up for any of our obedience classes are required to be current on their vaccines, including Bordetella.
Bordetella guards your dog against Kennel Cough, a highly contagious air borne virus in dogs. You will be required to show written proof of vaccines prior to the first class.
All puppies are to be as current as they can be, for their age, on their vaccines. We accept vaccines given by your veterinarian only, not vaccines given by a breeder or owner administered vaccines.
To sign up for any of our classes, click here to fill out our registration form and e-mail, fax or mail it to us. Click here for contact info. When we contact you, you will complete information about you and some about your dog. Pre-payment in full is required at that time, we accept cash, check, Paypal, Visa, or MasterCard. Please bring in your dogs vaccination history with you at the time of sign up. All classes are filled on a first come first serve basis.
All dogs recently adopted (within 2 months) from a shelter or rescue group will receive a 10% off discount. You will need to show proof of your adoption to receive this discount.
Puppy Kindergarten All puppies must learn basic manners, bite inhibition and socialization by the time they are 18 weeks of age. This class is a fun way to do it all. We keep class sizes small with just 8 pups per class and mainly off leash to help insure good manners. Besides basic commands we will also discuss house training, crate training, puppy proofing the house, nutrition, grooming and much more. All puppies must have started their vaccination series and be between he ages of 9 to 18 weeks. Classes are 6 weeks long and puppies come to all 6 classes. Two books are included in the price of class "BEFORE You Get Your Puppy" and "AFTER You Get Your Puppy" by Ian Dunbar. See above information on vaccine requirements.
Upcoming Puppy Kindergarten Classes:
Saturdays April 26, 2008 - May 31, 2008 5:15pm - 6:15pm
Thursdays April 24, 2008 - May 29, 2008 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Puppy Prep School
This 6 week long obedience class is for dogs 18 weeks to one year who have completed our Puppy Kindergarten Classes. Only dogs who have taken our PK Class are allowed. In this class we continue our basic commands- sit, down, stay, come when called and wait as well as introduce a new piece of agility equipment each week This helps young dogs learn about their own bodies and builds confidence. As with our PK classes there is puppy play time in each class.
Upcoming Prep School Classes

Basic Obedience: This beginning class is designed to provide dogs (and their people) with a solid foundation in house manners and basic training. Skills such as "sit", "down" and "come" as well as the ability to walk politely on a leash, will be the primary focus in the class. We will discuss proper games to play, keeping your dog from jumping up, healthy eating habits, stress free grooming, toenail clipping, and separation anxiety. The class runs for 6 weeks. The initial 30 minutes of the first class is a lecture without dogs (they can wait in the car or in one of our crates inside Tails-A-Wagging) where learning theory, training methods and equipment will be discussed. Dogs will join in for the last half of class and fully participate in all other classes. See above information on vaccine requirements. Upcoming Basic Obedience Around the Edges Classes:
Saturdays April 26, 2008 - May 31, 2008 6:30pm - 7:30pm
Tuesdays April 29, 2008 - June 3, 2008 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Private lessons:
Sometimes you may have a specific behavioral concern with your pet such as excessive barking, leash aggression, jumping up, etc. A full obedience class may not be in order. In such a case a private trainer can come to your home and deal with very specific issues with your pet and family. Private lessons run one hour per session.

Try fixing the problem before giving your dog away. Call or email us and tell us what your problems are. We will research them and help you as much as we can. Pet Obedience class is also an option. If you aren't willing to get help and possibly spend a little money {Obedience training is ridiculously cheap for all the benefits} then you may need to go get a fish instead.

TWO COMMON PROBLEMS DOGS WITH POOR DENTAL HYGIENE HAVE, ARE LOOSE AND ABSCESS TEETH.
DOES YOUR DOG HAVE BAD BREATH? STUDIES SHOW THAT 98 % OF DOGS WITH BAD BREATH ARE SUFFERING FROM PERIODONTAL DISEASE, A RESULT OF PLAQUE BUILD UP. IF LEFT UNTREATED, THIS CAN LEAD TO A BACTERIA INFECTION, WHICH CAN ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM AND SPREAD TO YOUR DOG'S KIDNEY, LIVER, HEART AND EVEN THEIR BRAIN. CHANCES ARE IF YOUR DOG HAS VERY BAD BREATH, THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH HIS TEETH. We scrape the tartar off the surface of the teeth and rinse and brush them. We do NOT go below the gum line or remove loose teeth. Infections and loose teeth will be brought to your attention, so they can be treated by your vet. Pets must be up to date on their rabies vaccine. We use Bach Rescue Remedy, made 100% naturally from spring water infused with wild flowers, either by the sun steeping method or by boiling. No drugs of any kind are used, just a lot of tender loving care. Please make your appointment soon.
The charge is $20.00 for normal cleanings, some cases could cost more or less. Offering FREE CONSULTATIONS UNTIL AUGUST.
GRADE YOUR PET’S TEETH USING THE BELOW PICTURES FOR COMPARISON:
Grade 1: Plaque accumulates at the gum line and there may be slight redness’ and bad breath

Grade 2: Calculus forms at the gum line, and there is redness and swelling.

Grade 3: Same as above plus gum begins to separate from the tooth. The veterinarian will use a dental probe to determine the depth of the separation. Mouth ulcers may be forming. Pus and bleeding may be present.

Grade 4: There is major loss of attachment between the gum and tooth. The teeth may be loose. Pus and bleeding may be present. The mouth odor is extremely foul.

Nutritional Supplements
Our pets are being overwhelmed every month by chemicals and lack of nutrition which may not be noticeable now, but will almost undoubtedly cause health problems in the future. Most foods we feed our pets have the vitamins and minerals cooked, leaving behind an unhealthy filler. Our supplements are being designed to eliminate the need for pesticides by using garlic, black walnut, omega 3 oil, brewers yeast, and other nutritional ingredients to make your pet unpalatable to parasites. Having a healthy pet is the first step in repelling parasites and preventing disease.
